Why Is It Important to Winterize My RV?

RVs use many liquid elements to keep your camper functioning. The winterization process drains these lines to ensure that they don’t get damaged when the temperature drops below freezing.
When liquids, especially water, freeze, it expands, damaging your RV’s pipes, tanks, and fittings. Winterizing your RV protects your RV and your investment. When spring rolls around again, your RV will be good to go!
You’ll also still be able to use your RV after it's been winterized. If you haven’t had time to get your RV winterized before temperatures drop, there are a few things you can do:
  • Skirt Your RV
  • Heat the Underbelly
  • Keep Water Moving
Skirting your RV is protecting the underbelly with plywood, preventing cold air from flowing near important parts of your RV.
Heating the underbelly of your RV is where you run a small electric heater under the belly of your RV, keeping it warm.
Open the tap overnight if you’re in an area with no drought. This allows water to drip, keeping the system moving and making it harder to freeze.

RV Winterization Methods

There are two main ways to winterize your RV:
  • Antifreeze method
  • Compressed air method
The antifreeze method is the most common way to winterize an RV. First, the RV tank is drained, and then we’ll run three gallons of antifreeze through the water lines to ensure they don’t freeze.
The compressed air method uses a tankless air compressor on the freshwater system. It will blow hot air into the system, bypassing the water heater and filters. Once the lines have been blown, our service technicians will pour in some antifreeze.
The right method for your RV will depend on the brand. If you’re unsure, check your RV owner’s manual.

When Should I Winterize My RV?

The right time to Winterize your RV is before the temperature drops below 20 to 32 degrees. Many technicians recommend winterizing your RV when the first cold of the winter arrives.
Winterization is often necessary, even if your RV is stored in a garage or shed. Extreme weather can also lead to potential battery issues. Have your RV examined after winter passes to ensure that there is no issue with your RV before hitting the road in the spring.
